John Ward (1856-1922) was Curator of Cardiff’s Municipal Museum and soon after the formation of the National Museum of Wales he became Keeper of the Department of Archaeology. He undertook a number of excavations at Cardiff Castle in the early years of the 20th Century, uncovering some of the remains of the Roman fort that had previously occupied the site. Photographs from these excavations are held in the Archaeology collections at the Museum, along with views of the exterior and interior of the Castle that were taken around the turn of the Century.
