Accessibility for Groups - National Wool Museum

All groups need to book two weeks in advance. When making a group booking please make us aware of any additional access or learning needs your group may have.

Visitors with limited mobility and wheelchair and pushchair users

There are 3 designated disabled parking bays in the car park before crossing the bridge, and a further 2 in the car park in the meadow.

Parking at the Museum is free.

Due to building to building work there is no available parking for buses or coaches.

From the car park to the Museum, there are flat paved routes that can easily be used by all visitors. However, please note that there is a downward slope from the road to the Museum entrance, and a grassed expanse between the meadow car park and the entrance.

There are 2 wheelchairs available on request, please ask in the shop. The chairs are allocated on a first come, first served basis and cannot be pre-booked, although any advanced requests will be considered.

Seating is available at various locations throughout the Museum. Please ask any member of staff if you require seating at any other location.

There is a lift to the first floor in the main building.

Please be aware that this is a historic building and the floor is uneven in some areas.

The cafe and shop are accessible to wheelchair users.

There are disabled toilet facilities off the main reception building and in the Resource and Collections Centre.

There is an orientation map of the building, which shows the areas where visitors may experience high noise levels. This is available in several languages.

Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing visitors

Audio frequency induction loops available at reception, the shop and cafe counters.

The galleries and exhibits have a good standard of written material to support the collections.

Visual interpretation of the main exhibition theme is clearly displayed.

Blind and partially sighted visitors

A number of displays have audio interpretation, and some galleries have ambient sounds.

The textile gallery has low light levels for conservation reasons, but walkways and text panels are clearly illuminated.

Additional learning needs

Groups and individuals are welcome and activities are available if pre-booked.

If you prefer to visit when we’re less crowded, there are usually fewer people on our site from 3pm each day.

Baby Changing Facilities

Baby changing facilities are provided in both the men's and women's toilets in the Museum, and in the disabled toilet in the Resource and Collections Centre.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on museum grounds provided they are kept on a short lead. Only assistance dogs are permitted into the Museum buildings.

There is noisy historic working machinery in some parts of the Museum.

Water bowls are provided at the museum entrance on request.

Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dog(s). Bins are provided in the garden and car park.
