Our Museums are open for learners! Visit in-person or take part in a Virtual Workshop.
Precautions have been taken at all Amgueddfa Cymru Museums to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Here is what school visitors can currently experience in-person at our Museums:
National Roman Legion Museum
Three classes per day can visit the National Roman Legion Museum. Monday to Friday. The trip includes a visit to the Museum gallery, Amphitheatre, Roman Baths, Soldier’s barrack room and the option to take part in a facilitated session. A school trip to Roman Caerleon | National Museum Wales
National Museum Cardiff
Two classes can visit National Museum Cardiff per day. Visits are self-led, providing the opportunity to come face to face with dinosaurs in the Evolution of Wales gallery and explore our amazing art galleries. Unfortunately, our lunch room and lockers are not available for use at present. National Slate Museum
One school can visit per day Mon-Fri but space in our lunch room is limited. An unfacilitated trip includes the opportunity to see the film and slate splitting demonstration and a self-led tour of the museum. We are also able to offer some facilitated sessions for a fee – see NSM webpage or call 02920 573702 for further details.
National Waterfront Museum
Up to 60 can visit per day Mon-Fri. A time can also be allocated in our lunchroom. We can offer chargeable facilitated workshops from Welsh Pirates to amazing Victorian inventions – see NWMS website or call 02920 573 600 or email learning.waterfront@museumwales.ac.uk for further details.
St Fagans National Museum of History.
We can currently accommodate two schools with up to 90 pupils each day. School groups can explore the grounds, galleries and historic buildings or take part in a range of facilitated workshops. Our lunchroom facilities are also available for use. You can find lots of self-led resources to help you make the most of your visit and for use in the classroom here Resources. Big Pit National Coal Museum.
Underground tours are available as usual with some restrictions. Up to 132 pupils & staff can visit per day Monday –Friday between 09.45 and 3pm. Groups of 6 (which includes teacher/supervisor) go underground with a Miner Guide at one time. Descents underground take place every 15 minutes. Visits to the surface are available for all visitors, which include the historic mine buildings, King Coal and the Pithead Baths.
