Medicus - Roman Medicine

National Roman Legion Museum

Herbal remedies, amputations and horse-hair stitches are all treatments performed by the Roman doctor. Find out about Roman medicine and the role that the gods played in healing the sick in this interactive role-play session. Led by a costumed facilitator.

In additon, pupils will have the opportunity to wear replica children’s armour and find out about the life of a Roman soldier in our reconstructed barrack room. This part must be led by the teacher or group leader - who will receive brief instructions from the facilitator on the day.

Masters & Slaves

National Roman Legion Museum

Peacock’s brains, stuffed dormouse and oysters are all on the menu in this role-play Roman feast. Pupils will play the role of a rich master or a lowly slave and discover what life was like at both ends of the spectrum. Led by a costumed facilitator.

Grammaticus - Roman Classroom

Discover how Romans educated their children in this cross curricula role-play session. Looking at language, numeracy and literacy pupils will find out more about Roman society under the strict guidance of a Roman school teacher. Led by a costumed facilitator.

Walking with Romans

Experience the amphitheatre and barracks with your own Roman guide. Find out what life was like in the fortress nearly 2,000 years ago.

Roman Boot Camp

Have you got what it takes to join the Roman army?  Discover what skills the Romans looked for in a soldier.  New recruits will compete in groups to test their paces on the marching square!

Pupils will also visit a reconstructed barrack room and wear replica children’s armour. The teacher or group leader must lead this part of the session. Instructions will be given by the facilitator on the day.

Saturnalia: A Roman Christmas?

National Roman Legion Museum

Take a trip back in time and visit a Roman preparing for the midwinter festival of Saturnalia. Learn about the customs of the Roman festival while sharing modern midwinter traditions.

Spring Bulbs for Schools

Plant bulbs in your school grounds to study climate change. Join this UK wide investigation and improve science and numeracy skills. All schools must apply by the end of July to take part in the following September. Free to all schools in Wales -spaces limited.
