The Website is Changing

Chris Owen, 11 December 2014

If you’ve been browsing our Visiting or Learning pages recently, you may have noticed a new look to those areas. From 9th December 2014, we are trialling parts of a new, updated Amgueddfa Cymru website with you.

We need your feedback to help make these new pages as good as they can be. If there’s anything that didn’t work for you; anything that you found confusing or difficult to use; any information that you couldn’t find easily; or anything that you’d like to see improved, please let us know. Equally, if there are things that you really liked about the pages, we’d still love to hear from you!

Why update the website?

During an extensive study of the existing website, we identified many areas where we think we can improve.

One of our core aims is to bring you the information you need more quickly and with less fuss. We are doing this by improving our content, simplifying our navigation and reducing the clutter on our pages.

With these new pages we want to bring you a fresh, modern web experience and one that works equally well on any device you may be using - be it a mobile, tablet, screen-reader or desktop computer. Visiting each of our seven museums is a unique experience and we also hope to bring a little more of that flavour of that to the web.

These are just a few of the ways we want to make the website better. We will be doing more work on all this in the coming weeks and months.

Coming in 2015

During the first half of 2015 you will see more and more areas of the website updated and improved. New Collections, Curatorial, Venue Hire and Blog pages will follow soon, as well as a new, updated Online Shop.

We will use any lessons learnt during this period to make sure that every area of the website is as good as we can possibly make it.

Your feedback and input to the new site will help us make that happen. And, of course, this is just the beginning.

Update 1 - 16 January 2015

Huge thanks to everyone who sent their feedback to us over the past few weeks. There are too many bug fixes and updates to list here, but here are a few of the changes we've made so far:

What's On:

  • The calendar feature has been restored - you can now view events on a chosen date.
  • Added the option to view events at all our museums.
  • Show 'List View' by default.
  • Added images, suitability and cost information to the List View.
  • View and date choices are now 'sticky', so they won't reset as you switch pages.

Blogs - this is the new, redesigned blog area. We hope you like it.

Website Search - A number of broken links were fixed. We also improved the display of search results on mobile phones.

Update Collections databases - Paleontology, Mineralogy of Wales, Mollusca, Vertebrate and Marine Invertebrates database all redesigned and updated.

Hi Jackie,

Sorry you didn't find what you were looking for. The site you were using must've had a link to the old site which didn't match up exactly. By selecting 19th February I was able to see the Model Railway Show event:

http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/slate/whatson/?date_range=2015-02-19

Update: I've modified our handling of older What's On links to alleviate this. Old links to listings for an individual museum or to an specific event should now take you to the correct place on the new site.

Hope this helps,
Chris

I was meant to be re-directed from one site by clicking the link to the model railway event 19-22nd feb - link didn't work- I ended up with this clicked on the 19th feb and the event wasn't listed so not much use - I had to mess around going via google - not a great start J

Sarah,
Thanks for your kind words about the new site. We're really glad you liked it!

Jo,
We think we've replicated the problem you had with the position of the Menu button and fixed it. If you have any more problems, don't hesitate to send us an email and we'll investigate.

Susan,
I'm pleased to say we've added information about suitability for families back to the What's On listing pages, so you won't need to click through to each event. I hope this helps!

Dafydd,
Diolch eto. Lliw y botwm "Anfon sylw" wedi cael ei newid nawr i fod mwy ddarllenadwy.

Thanks again to everyone for your valuable feedback. There'll be a full update soon, but work is continuing on every area of the website.

Chris

I found the rolling pages a bit distracting and some of the parts didn't fit on my screen which is a wide one, for example Menu on the top right. I found it quite difficult to navigate my way around. I just wanted a more simple introduction to the museum to plan my visit.

I love the new site - I've found out more than I ever have about the Museum, staff and collections by browsing for a few minutes ahead of my visit tomorrow. I went on a bit of an unintended journey - which i guess is the purpose of an interactive site. The blogs are great, did want to see a few more pics of the actual artwork to give flavour of the Artes Mundi Exhibition - but have enough info to want to visit. Good job - whoever designed it!

I agree with James. I'm viewing this on a W8 tablet and I am interested in suggesting a visit to St Fagans to some friends (we're all English) in April. I'm looking at the Highlights page and don't want to scroll down through screeds of pretty photos, past the odd bit of textual content. I'd like a page that lists in actual words the reasons why we might enjoy visiting. Maybe a couple of small photos as encouragement.

Diolch Chris. Dwi'n meddwl mod i wedi danfon y neges gynt heb orffen yn iawn (mae'n amhosib gweld y botwm 'Anfon sylw' am ei fod yn wyn ar gefndir llwyd golau!). Mae'n dda gweld eich bod yn defnyddio cyfnod 'beta' i gael ymateb am fod hyn yn gallu bod yn ffordd hwylus o gael adborth 'go iawn' heb wario gormod o arian/amser.

Diolch am dy adborth, Dafydd. Dyn ni'n dal i weithio ar fireinio llywio'r wefan, a sut y mae'n ymateb i sgriniau o wahanol faint, gan ddefnyddio analytics, mapiau gwres ac adborth fel y gadawaist ti uchod.

Yn ystod yr wythnos ddiwetha, mi gysonwyd 'header' sawl ardal, fel 'Amdanom Ni' a Chelf ar-lein. Ychwanegwyd linciau 'nôl i'r hafan sydd â brandio fwy amlwg. Mi fyddwn ni'n edrych yn fwy manwl ar roi ddewislen 'hamburger' yn yr ardaloedd hynny, i wella'r cysondeb llywio ymhellach.

Symleiddio llywio'r wefan yw un o'n prif amcanion, er mwyn galluogi defnyddwyr i ganfod y cynnwys maen nhw'n ei gyrchu mewn ffordd gryno. Oystyried maint ac amrywiaeth y cynulleidfaoedd sy'n ymweld â'r wefan, falle na fydd y gydbwysedd yn iawn bob tro - rydym ni'n ystyried y pwncyma'n ofalus iawn ar hyn o bryd, a byddi'n gweld rhagor o newidiadau maeso law. Diolch eto.

Mae'r diwyg newydd yn dda ond i gael y gorau o'r deunydd ar y wefan mae wir angen darllen ar sgrin eitha mawr. Ond mae llywio'r wefan wedi ei greu ar gyfer sgrin fach yn unig sy'n eitha od.

O fynd fewn i unrhyw adran dwi'n teimlo ar goll - mae brand yr Amgueddfa yn diflannu a mae'r llywio yn anghyson. Dwi ddim yn hoff o'r botwm 'dewislen' sydd ddim yn ffordd amlwg o lywio nol i'r hafan neu adrannau eraill (a mae'n dyblygu y dewisiadau ar y chwith). Mae'n ffordd eitha anghyfarwydd o lywio gwefan. Ar rai adrannau mae'r dewislen yn diflannu a botwm dewis iaith yn ei le, felly mae'n anghyson

The website site looks very stylish but I'm not sure it's as user friendly as the old one. I enjoy going to different types of events at the museum but they now seem harder to find. It would be great not only to have events listed by month but also to have search filters. For example, search under 'science' , 'crafts' etc or by visitor type eg adults or children. I also liked the old add to calendar option. Perhaps, there could be suggestions for ''other events that might interest you' perhaps interlinked between the museums.
