A message from David Anderson, Director General, Amgueddfa Cymru

There can be no doubt that this is a very stressful time for us all as we face this national emergency together.

For all of us across Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales, closing our museums, which are normally full of schools, families and community groups as well as other visitors, has been a challenging and sometimes emotional experience.

When National Museum Cardiff opened in 1928 the world had not long moved on from the horrors of the First World War and a global flu pandemic. During the war, with the museum only partly built, the future of the museum was in doubt. But the nation held onto its belief that it needed a national museum. And, over the last century, our contribution to the development of Wales and its cultural life has been almost beyond measure. Can we imagine how much poorer Wales would now be, in every way, if this had not happened?

Today we are here to help people and communities in Wales to have a better and culturally richer life, to protect our natural environment, and to sustain and build our connections with peoples in Europe and across the world.

As a charity we need our supporters more than ever to ensure the continued success of Amgueddfa Cymru to fulfil our mission of Inspiring People, Changing Lives. We are so grateful for all the donations from our visitors and they really do make a difference. If you feel you are able to help your national museum at this difficult time then we would very much appreciate your support.
