Wales’ favourite Impressionist paintings and sculptures are temporarily moving to a different part of National Museum Cardiff. Our historic building requires some maintenance work on its roof above some of our galleries, so we need to close them to the public to keep our collections and visitors safe.

Most of the paintings will temporarily move to gallery 12. While they are there we will be working on plans to redisplay them at the end of 2022.

What’s moving?

The temporary display of these artworks will be in a smaller gallery than usual. This means that we will not be able to display quite as many artworks as we have done in the past. The paintings will not be languishing in store though – this is an opportunity for us to look at the artworks in a new light. During the next year we will be sharing stories from the research projects we carry out behind the scenes here at the home of Wales’ national collection.

How can you influence the gallery in the future?

We’d love to hear your views on ways in which we could display these artworks again in the future. Which works do you most enjoy seeing when you visit us in Cardiff? Which part of their history do you want to know? Do you want to know more about the people who painted them, the people who collected them, or the people who have been inspired by them?

Our online consultation will be live in the first part of 2022, so keep an eye on this page and our social media to find out how you can take part.
