What was it like to be a Roman Soldier nearly 2000 years ago? Discover what skills soldiers needed, where they came from, and how the invading Roman army defeated the local Celtic tribes. Learn about the lives of soldiers living in Isca – now modern day Caerleon – and explore the impressive weapons and armour used by the Roman Empire.

Train like a Roman! During this session, you will have the chance to learn Latin commands and march on the spot in your classroom.

Roman Bootcamp discusses themes of invasion and has some loud noises including recreating a ‘war cry’. Please let us know when you are booking if you have any pupils that would be sensitive to these experiences, and we will do our best to make everyone feel comfortable!

Curriculum

Humanities: Events and human experiences are complex, and are perceived, interpreted and represented in different ways.

Age: 8-11

Learning objectives: 

  • Discover what life was like for new recruits in the Roman army, paying attention to their different backgrounds, how they were trained and what was expected of them.
  • Review the ways these events and experiences are perceived, interpreted and represented.
  • Consider the differences and similarities in how the Romans may have felt in the Roman army invading Britain compared to those of the Britons.
  • Reflect on what we can learn from Roman times to improve society today.
