How did life differ for Wales’ colliers and coal owners? Step back in time and discover the lives of four men and women from Wales’ industrial past and explore themes of migration, the role of Welsh Steam Coal, the dangers of coal mining and the industrial development of Wales.

✏️ Take Part

In this session you will become immersed in the lives of those involved in the Welsh coal industry through bespoke costumes based on historical records from Wales.

Pupils will learn through dressing up and taking on the roles of colliers and coal owners.

ℹ️ About This Session

Colliers and Coal Owners discusses themes of health and injury and has some reference to death. 

This is an interactive session that has physical elements. Please let us know when you are booking if you have any pupils that would be sensitive to these experiences, and we will do our best to make everyone feel comfortable!

Duration: 30 minutes
Cost: Led by Museum staff - £40 for up to 15 pupils, £60 for up to 35. Free for some schools (see booking information).

Learning Objectives 

  • Build up a body of knowledge and develop skills to connect and apply that knowledge in different contexts through exploring the role of people involved in the Welsh coal industry.
  • Lead and play different roles and understand the roles of people in the past. 
  • Develop knowledge about their culture, community, society and the world, now and in the past by discovering more about the lives and roles of coal owners and workers in nineteenth century Wales.
  • Build mental and emotional well-being by developing confidence, resilience and empathy through learning about the health and wellbeing of coal mining communities in Wales.
