A school trip to Big Pit National Coal Museum

We have a range of workshops and activities available at Big Pit! Explore & experience:

Learning workshops:

    What was life like for the thousands of children in Victorian Britain who went out to work? Draw on a variety of sources of evidence to find out more about the lives of working children, including objects from our collections.

    What is coal and how was it mined? What was it like to work underground? Discover the stories of the men, women, children and animals who mined coal here in Wales.  A guided tour of our simulated mining experience, King Coal.

    What jobs did children do underground? What toys and games did they play with? How has the school day changed? Discover the history of the children of the Welsh coalfields in this fun, exciting and interactive workshop led by our learning staff.  

Add on '12 Months Out' or 'When Coal was King' - our free virtual workshops that build on your underground tour and can be delivered in your classroom via Teams before or after your visit! 

Underground Tour

Travel 90 metres (300 feet) underground and experience a unique and captivating journey around a section of original underground workings led by with one of Big Pit’s Miner Guides. 

King Coal

Enjoy an exciting audio-visual experience with exhibitions of modern mining equipment in the Big Pit Mining Galleries.

Pithead Baths

The Pithead Baths building houses a museum that uses objects and images to tell the story of coal mining in Wales.

Historic Buildings

You can see and interact with various buildings and machinery around the Museum site that would have been crucial to the mining operations at Big Pit.
