Statement by Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales regarding industrial action

A number of Wales’ national museums are currently being affected by continuous industrial action by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), over proposed changes to weekend working allowances (Premium Payments).

We hope to bring this dispute to a conclusion as soon as possible. Representatives from the Museum have met with representatives from PCS on two occasions in recent weeks. These meetings were to explore the potential for a resolution.

While these discussions continue, we are progressing with individual consultation as planned, which provides all affected staff with an opportunity to have their say on the cessation of Premium Payments. We are pleased that staff are taking the opportunity to do so.

A separate meeting was held with our Trade Unions to discuss the number of weekends our staff work – a key issue raised through the individual consultation process.

We understand the cessation of Premium Payments is a sensitive issue for staff, however we have to make savings as an organisation. Our financial position remains the same. We are facing a 4.7% cut to our budget on top of a 25% real terms reduction in our income over the last five years.

We would like to reassure our visitors that we are doing all that we can to keep our museums open and services running during this time but would urge the public to check our website for the latest information before travelling to our Museums (www.museumwales.ac.uk).

Five national museums are open this week including St Fagans National History Museum, National Museum Cardiff, the National Waterfront Museum, National Slate Museum and the National Roman Legion Museum. Details are as follows:
