Amgueddfa Cymru uses museum collections to improve wellbeing in care homes
Date:
2021-11-19Following the success of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales project Objects of Comfort, during the Covid pandemic, new digital resources have now been developed to connect people living in care homes and those at risk of social isolation with Wales’ national collections.
Thanks to funding from The Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust and The D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust a series of films have been created by artists and creative practitioners from across Wales to improve the wellbeing of those at risk of social isolation.
The films range from a mindful beach walk inspired by John Dilwyn Llewelyn’s photography to a creative look at Amgueddfa Cymru’s’s ceramics collections and a glass artist inspired by the collections of Roman glass. Amgueddfa Cymru curators have also been sharing their favourite objects from the collections, and a series of films will also be created inspired by these objects.
The films have been created so that they can be enjoyed equally by those in care settings, at home or by any group which meets regularly and is looking for meaningful and fun activities to improve the mood and wellbeing of those who take part.
The project is a supported by a development team which includes Amgueddfa Cymru, the Welsh Government, the Older Person’s Commisioner, Alzheimer’s Society, Innovate Trust and the Greater Gwent Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Partnership.
Sharon Ford, Health and Wellbeing Programmes Manager for Amgueddfa Cymru, said,
“We’ve had great feedback from people in care homes who have used the resources and have also helped shape them by sharing their memories, giving feedback and providing ideas for new themes.
“I hope that more care settings across Wales take advantage of the resources available to generate conversations and stimulate happy memories and to improve mental health for those at risk of social isolation.”
“We are very grateful to The Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust and The D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust for supporting the Objects of Comfort project and it’s their generous support which has enabled us to develop these resources further.
“Thank you to players of the People’s Postcode Lottery who generously support the learning and engagement activities across our seven sites – helping to make projects like this possible.”
Since September 2020, Amgueddfa Cymru has been creating collections-inspired activities for care homes and groups who wish to have stimulating conversations and take part in engaging activities centred around objects from our museums’ collections.
The resources were developed by Amgueddfa Cymru with support from, the Welsh Government, the Older Person’s Commisioner, Alzheimer’s Society, Innovate Trust, he Greater Gwent Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Partnership and a number of homes and groups from across south Wales.
Amgueddfa Cymru is a family of seven museums and a collections centre, which are all free to enter thanks to the support of the Welsh Government. Together, it is home to the nation’s art, history and science collections, which will continue to grow so that they can be used and enjoyed by both present and future generations.
One of its museums, St Fagans National Museum of History which explores the history and culture of Wales, won the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2019.
As a registered charity, Amgueddfa Cymru is grateful for all support. The events and exhibitions programme is supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
