A new exhibition which aims to elevate and praise the rich culture that the often-forgotten LGBTQ+ communities of Wales have to offer will be opening at the National Waterfront Museum on 12 March. Running until 31 July, Welsh LGBTQ+ history, culture and artwork will be celebrated through select objects as well as new artworks produced by Amgueddfa Cymru Producers, who have co-ordinated the Trawsnewid project.

This exhibition, the ideas, concepts and artwork all sprang from workshops run by the Amgueddfa Cymru Producers; a collective of young people aged 16-25 from across Wales, to inspire new voices to work and collaborate with archive and heritage staff at the museum.

 Jake A Griffiths, one of Amgueddfa Cymru’s Young Producer said:

“As a non-binary, bisexual I recognized the need for representation within museum spaces, and how art can be a conduit for social justice. I’ve been involved with National Museum Wales for several years, working on wider creative projects and understand the need for the unseen to be seen. Through this exhibition I hope people, and especially young people can see that there is a place for them and that their voices and ideas can be heard and seen.”

Trawsnewid is an Amgueddfa Cymru- National Museum Wales project aimed at LGBTQ+ young people aged 16-25. The project is run partly online and partly in person at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea. The project explores queer Welsh history and the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people living in Wales today through talks and workshops.

Amgueddfa Cymru is a family of seven museums and a collections centre, which are all free to enter thanks to the support of the Welsh Government. Together, it is home to the nation’s art, history and science collections, which will continue to grow so that they can be used and enjoyed by both present and future generations.
