Enjoy an ENGINEOUS day full of hands-on science activities for all the family for Science Week!

The National Slate Museum Llanberis is gearing up for an ‘Engineous’ day of activities to celebrate National Science week.  From light circuits to rock cycles, ENGINEOUS, which take place on Sunday 17 March will include a whole host of activities on the theme of POWER.

Local Education company SBARDUNO will be holding workshops to create wind anemometers and creating rock cycles with chocolate!  Bangor University’s Electronic Engineering department will be holding Joule Thief workshops – showing how to create light circuits and they will be bringing their very special Robot!  There’s also a family science shows with S4C’s  ‘Cyw’ scientist SBARC  and the museum’s  ‘silly scientists’ will be creating bubbles and holding craft sessions throughout the day.

There’s also a waterwheel challenge to try, as Lowri Ifor, the museum’s Learning Officer explained:

“ENGINEOUS aims to promote the museum’s innovative industrial history with lots of fun activities for all the family. By taking part in the waterwheel challenge, for example, families can have a go at putting the key principles of water-power to the test by building their own wheels and learn about our amazing huge waterwheel - it’s the largest on mainland Britain and once powered most of the machinery here!

The event is supported by SBARDUNO and Bangor University’s Electronic Engineering department.

Awen Ashworth, of Sbarduno said: "For several years now, Sbarduno has had the honour of working in partnership with the Slate Museum in Llanberis to deliver various scientific workshops. Having access to a local venue, full of examples of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) throughout the centuries is very important to promote this fascinating field, as well as to inspire the next generation of Scientists and Engineers. Being offered science workshops that are full of fun, experimentation and learning in an inspiring and home-like setting is important, and these sessions are also an opportunity for families to learn together and have fun together."

Dr Daniel Roberts, Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering and Director of Student Engagement in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangor University said: "It is a pleasure to be able to run a science workshop in the museum where it is an opportunity to compare old and new technologies. It’s important to engage young minds with exciting science activities to generate interest in following STEM courses in the future, vital areas for the UK and the rest of the world. By running workshops like this, we encourage them to follow their passion and lay the foundations for what is possible in scientific disciplines."

ENGINEOUS  takes place on 17 March 2024  between 10am and 3pm.

Entry is FREE but there is an additional cost for the sbarduno and Sbarc shows which need to be booked in advance.
