Sixteen icons from the seven wonders of Wales

On 31 July 2007 celebrities from all corners of Wales come together to campaign for icons close to their hearts to become the definitive national treasure on a new TV programme.

The BBC tv programme, National Treasures, will profile the 16 most iconic treasures from collections across the seven museum sites across Wales. The icons are being championed by top personalities from the sporting world, TV, the music industry, aristocracy and even a war hero, all of whom are celebrating what it means to be Welsh.

Robin Gwyn, Director of Communications at Amgueddfa Cymru said: “We are delighted to be working with BBC Wales on this project and it is great to be working with such popular Welsh personalities during our centenary year. We hope the series will spark the imagination and encourage people from all over Wales and beyond to vote for their own favourite national treasure.”

The series, which is to be screened on BBC 2 Wales, will be hosted each week at one of Amgueddfa Cymru's seven museums. Over the course of the series the items will be showcased and with the help of museum staff and independent historians, such as Dr John Davies, the celebrities will learn more about their object of choice as they explore its history and purpose in time.

Viewers will then vote for their favourite item of four each week, and the winners will go through to the final show. This will provide an opportunity for the top five items (one from each show and the top runner up) to be examined by the audience.
