New learning space for the Pithead Baths — the perfect birthday gift

Next Friday (4 April), Big Pit: National Coal Museum will launch its new learning space as the award-winning coal mining museum celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Thanks to joint funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (104K) and the Gulbenkian (100K), staff at Big Pit are delighted to be able to offer this latest new addition to the thousands of visitors attracted there year after year.

This new building has an exciting and innovative outreach purpose and will be proof that using heritage, culture and museum collections is an effective way of sparking and maintaining enthusiasm.

Fitted out with state of the art new media and technology, it will provide opportunities for young people, and will also show that museums have something to offer the whole community, irrespective of age, ability or cultural background.

Dan Clayton-Jones, Chairman of the Heritage Lottery Fund's Committee for Wales says:  "Modern museums are evolving and are now more interactive, innovative and high tech than they have ever been before. The new learning space at Big Pit teaches people about their industrial heritage in a fresh and exciting way and will bring local heritage to life for a wide audience".

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, the National Roman Legion Museum, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, the National Wool Museum, the National Slate Museum and the National Waterfront Museum.

Entry to each museum is free thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
