A Christmas tree with a difference!

is on display now at the National Waterfront Museum.

Inspired by a forthcoming exhibition Tic Toc, it’s about Time, the 11ft interactive Christmas tree has been cleverly created by students from the School of Industrial Design at Swansea Metropolitan University.

The second year students were set a brief in September to put their thinking caps on to create an alterative tree for visitors to enjoy during Christmas.

The construction needed to tie in with the spirit of the season, but also provide a sculptural decorative feature closely linked to the exhibition.

“The students came up trumps with their designs,” said Gallery Author Andrew Deathe. “They have been really imaginative and the end result definitely has a wow factor and meets the brief perfectly.”

The tree, which is standing tall in the Museum’s main hall, invites visitors to turn a handle which transports Christmas balls to the very top before cascading down via funnels to the bottom.

Speaking about the project, lecturer Christopher Thomas said: “Our students can really be proud of the professional results they have achieved.  To complete this project to the strict deadline it took great team spirit and individual commitment.

“Once again we are hugely thankful to the National Waterfront Museum for this opportunity and we would also like to give thanks to our students for their dedication.”
