Waterfront celebrates Year of the Monkey

Chinese New Year will soon be here and the National Waterfront Museum is once again helping the Swansea Chinese Community Co-op Centre with its exciting plans for the celebrations.

2016 welcomes the Year of the Monkey and visitors are encouraged to join in the festivities with a day of music, workshops and performances for all the family this Sunday, 7 February from 11am-4.30pm.

Those coming along will have the chance to see a traditional lion dance, take part in arts and crafts - such as learning to write Chinese - as well as watch special demonstrations including Chinese dancing, acrobatics and the jaw-dropping Chinese face changing.

Other events taking place during the day include a welcome by the Lord Mayor of the City & County of Swansea and a countdown to welcome in the New Year at 4pm as it will be midnight in China.

“We’re delighted to be hosting the bright and colourful Chinese New Year celebrations,” said Head of Museum, Steph Mastoris. “It promises to be a fun, busy event with lots for visitors to see and do throughout the day and it’s great that we’re able to showcase the wonderful culture, history and traditions the Chinese communities bring to the city and Wales.”

Speaking on behalf of the Swansea Chinese Community Co-op Centre, Chairperson Mrs Wai Fong Lee MBE said: "The Chinese community has had a long history in Wales and we hope that events like these can bring communities closer together by promoting cultural awareness. We're really looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year at the National Waterfront again this year, and hope that everyone will have fun and enjoy themselves!"
