National Museum and Library present Eisteddfod crown

Two of Wales’s most prominent national institutions, Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales and the National Library, are sponsoring the Crown at this year’s National Eisteddfod at Mold in August.

During a ceremony to be held at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth on Friday 18 May, the Crown will be formally presented to the Eisteddfod - part of a series of events to mark the centenary of both Amgueddfa Cymru and the National Library and a recognition by them of the contribution of the Eisteddfod to Welsh cultural life.

The Crown has been designed by Llanelli jeweller, Mari Thomas. Mari was also responsible for creating last year’s Crown and won the Gold Medal for Art and Craft at the 2003 Eisteddfod.

Mari’s design for the 2007 Crown is based on the Bronze Age Lunula torc discovered at Llanllyfni and held at National Museum Cardiff. The Crown is made of silver and 18 carat gold and took nearly four months to complete.

‘National institutions underpin a country’s sense of national identity. It is fitting, therefore, that three of Wales’s most important national institutions are working together like this in the centenary year of the National Museum and the National Library’ said Robin Gwyn, Director of Communications at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales.

Presentation of the Crown
2.30 pm, Friday 18 May
