In search of slate

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales’s Historic Buildings Unit – the team responsible for dismantling buildings across Wales and re-erecting them at St Fagans: National History Museum to secure their future – is looking for traditional Welsh slate from Rhayader, Powys.

Cilewent, originally from Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr, is one of the open-air Museum’s most popular buildings and in upkeeping and conserving the building, the Historic Buildings Unit is hoping to replace the farmhouse’s slate roof.

Anyone who has information or slate to donate to the Museum to ensure Cilewent remains an authentic representation of a ‘longhouse’ – a common farmhouse style in mid and south Wales in the 15th century – is encouraged to contact Janet Wilding, Project Manager, Historic Buildings Unit on (029) 20573420 or e-mail janet.wilding@museumwales.ac.uk.

Entry to all National Museum Wales - Amgueddfa Cymru sites is free, thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, Blaenafon, National Wool Museum, Dre-fach Felindre, National Slate Museum, Llanberis and the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.
