The Waterfront Museum welcomes art historian Peter Lord

Art historian Peter Lord will next week (Thursday 26 November) deliver an insightful lecture entitled Imaging People in Industrial Wales at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea.

Peter, who specialises in the study of the visual culture of Wales, will trace the development of the imaging of people in industrial Wales from the eighteenth century until the mid-twentieth century.

Early images are mainly the work of painters visiting from outside, but in the late nineteenth century images made by artists and photographers who themselves emerged from industrial society become more common. In the period between the two world wars, the imaging of the people of industrial Wales is dominated in painting by three insiders, Evan Walters, Vincent Evans and Archie Rees Griffiths.

Peter’s talk marks the end of the Museum’s Industry in Art Sunday Talks, a successful run of themed lectures on various disciplines of art.

“We’re delighted to welcome Peter Lord to the Museum,” said Head of Museum, Steph Mastoris. “This will be a real treat for those with an interest in art and we’re thrilled to be able to offer something new and different to our visitors.”

Peter is the author of a three-volume history of Welsh art, The Visual Culture of Wales. His latest publications include The Meaning of Pictures: Images of Personal, Social and Political Identity (2009) and Richard Wilson: Life and Legacy (2009). Peter Lord holds a research fellowship at CREW, Swansea University.

Imaging People in Industrial Wales will take place on Thursday 26 November at 7pm. To book your place, please contact (01792) 638950.
