For the love of food!

Visitors to Big Pit can blow away the New Year blues this weekend (29 and 30 January) by exploring the best of local food and drink at a ‘Love Food’ festival.

With the best of Welsh food and drink from local suppliers, visitors can browse and purchase that perfect gift for a loved one, or just enjoy the fare for themselves.  Children can make their own chocolates to take home, or design their own unique flavour of cheese.  The event is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Wales the True Taste roadshow, which promotes the best of Welsh produce.  As well as beautiful food, prepared with love, visitors can enjoy music from local bands.

Kathryn Stowers, Communications Officer, said: “At a time of year when people are feeling the winter blues, our event will herald the start of Spring and all the excitement of St Dwynwen’s Day, the patron saint of Welsh lovers, and St Valentine’s Day.

“Visitors can buy a whole range of locally produced products, from wine to fudge, bread to whisky and also learn more about local food from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Wales the True Taste roadshow.   Children can find out more about what goes into making food by making their own chocolate and designing their own flavours of cheese to take home.

“In keeping with the theme of love, there will be romance-themed live music across the weekend, with Gwent Accordion Club on Saturday and Oakdale Silver Band on Sunday.  The perfect way to finish a visit will be by sampling homemade Cawl or Welshcakes in Big Pit’s own Miners’ Canteen.  All in all, this should be the perfect way to spend an enjoyable day with your loved ones.”
