£100,000 awarded to Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales by players of People’s Postcode Lottery

Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales has been awarded funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, to offer visitors a broad range of exhibitions and activities at its national museum in Cardiff.

This vital support of £100,000, awarded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, will allow National Museum Cardiff to further develop its programme over the next 12 months and share Wales’ national collections with more people.

From sculpture, to landscape, wildlife photography and the UK’s biggest contemporary art prize, National Museum Cardiff has a feast of exhibitions and events in 2014.

The major exhibition Richard Wilson: The Transformation of European Artwill mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Richard Wilson (1714-1782), perhaps Wales’s greatest artist. Before Wilson, British artists painted the landscape to record its appearance. Wilson showed how landscape paintings could have layers of meaning and convey mood and emotions too (5 July – 26 October 2014).

Seeing Nature is a new family exhibition which will give visitors an opportunity to experience an insect’s-eye view of the world, and get up close and personal with natural history objects under the microscope (19 July 2014 – April 2015).

Andkick-starting the Museum’s First World War commemoration programme is The Great War: Britain’s Efforts and Ideals - an exhibitionfeaturing works by some of Britain’s finest artists such as Welsh painters Augustus John and Frank Brangwyn (Saturday 2 August - January 2015).

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised over £35.6 million for good causes to date and this is the start of long-term and vital support for Amgueddfa Cymru’s work across Wales. Kate Pearson, Deputy Head of Charities People’s Postcode Lottery said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be announcing our support of National Museum Wales. It’s great that the £100,000 award from players of People’s Postcode Lottery will enable the organisation to offer an improved range of exhibitions and reach out to new sections of the community.  We hope that all visitors relish the opportunity to visit these new exhibitions.”

David Anderson, Director General, Amgueddfa Cymru explains more:
