Lesson 56 Wales was made in the months following the referendum for the creation of a Welsh National Assembly. The work is based on photographs of textbooks used by Finnemore’s grandmother at her school in rural Carmarthenshire. Written from an exclusively English perspective, the texts show a disregard for the identity, language and culture of Wales. However, the childlike doodles help to undermine or even mock the text’s ‘authoritative’ voice.
