Mere Poussepin seated at a Table

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 88.3 x 65.4 cm

Acquired: 1968; Purchase

Accession Number: NMW A 149

In 1913, the year in which the artist converted to Catholicism, she was commissioned by the Meudon Chapter of the Order of the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Virgin of Tours to paint a portrait of their founder, Mere Marie Poussepin (1653-1744). This picture was based on a prayer card of 1911 with a portrait of Mere Poussepin, derived from an eighteenth-century oil painting. Between 1913 and 1920 John worked on at least six versions of the portrait, of which the primary example was installed at the convent.

What an extraordinary portrait of peacefulness, piety, liveliness and perhaps an element of mischief hinted at. So much of the inner life displayed by an artist of quiet merit. Amongst such a plethora of talent surrounding it in the gallery, this piece does strike a quite unique chord.
