Sir Thomas Hanmer (1612-1678)

JOHNSON, Cornelius (1593 - 1663)

Date: 1631

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 77.5 x 62.2 cm

Acquired: 1944; Purchase

Accession Number: NMW A 40

Sir Thomas Hanmer, 2nd baronet, of BettisfieldPark, Flintshire, is wearing a fashionable lace collar and has a curling lock of hair over one shoulder. Although only nineteen in this portrait, he was already making his way at the Court of Charles I. During the Civil War he fought for the Royalists and was later known as a gardener famous for introducing the Agate Hanmer tulip to Britain. Johnson, although British-born of Flemish Parents, trained abroad before setting up as a portraitist in London. He retired to Holland at the outbreak of the Civil War. The restrained silvery tonality of the portrait complements the refined, sensitive character of the sitter.

I would like to reproduce this painting in a small academic book, on the artist, Cornelius Johnson. Please could you let me know how to access a high-resolution image of this work? The print-run is 1,500 copies; the rights sought are English language world-wide (NO online rights required). The book is just 64 pages and for a serious scholarly audience.

I would be very grateful if you could email me back as soon as possible for you.

With many thanks, Karen Hearn
