Thomas Jones spent two years training in the studio of Richard Wilson, although in his published Memoirs he admitted that a lot of time was wasted on ‘idle mirth and frolick’. This small classical landscape clearly demonstrates the influence of his master. But, unlike many of Wilson’s Italianate scenes, this picture does not evoke a sense of Rome - the castle, winding river and rock formations are reminiscent of Wales.
