Spring

LENZ, Maximilian (1860 - 1948)

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 174.2 x 365.7 cm

Acquired: 1978; Purchase

Accession Number: NMW A 589

Lenz studied with Gustav Klimt at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and in 1897 was a co-founder of the Vienna Secession. In 1903 he accompanied Klimt on a visit to Ravenna, where both artists were deeply impressed by the hieratic style and decorative use of gold in the Byzantine mosaics. This allegorical figure of Spring accompanied by a peacock dates from around 1904. At the left a couple in contemporary dress watch four dancing nymphs. Its large scale suggests that this work was intended for an architectural setting.

I loved this painting. After two years living in Cardiff and ignoring the gallery, I finally visited during an unexpected stay in the city. The sight of this painting around the corner, through the opening, and across the room... Wow! I remember sitting on the bench for a few minutes to contemplate. Such calm power. Such complete beauty.

And I understand by reading the comments that it is no longer on display. Well, I hope this is corrected soon. This is not a minor painting to be kept in a basement for lack of space in the gallery.

I miss this beautiful painting - it always took my breath away and brought a smile to my face. Thank you to the museum staff (Tyrone?)for helping me find it on here at least!
