Born in London in 1892, into a rich and cosmopolitan Jewish family, Lowinsky belonged initially to the circle of Charles Ricketts (1866-1931) and his earliest work was much influenced by Ricketts's enthusiasm for the art of Gustave Moreau and the wispy idealisations of Burne-Jones. This early oil painting is unique among Lowinsky's extant works as it treats a topical subject, the influx of Belgian refugees to Britain after the German invasion of Belgium of 1914.
