Thomas Jones (1742-1803) was the son of a Radnorshire landowner. After two years at Oxford, he left in 1761 without a degree to study painting in London. He spent two years as Richard Wilson's apprentice before starting his independent career in 1765. Jones's friend Giuseppe Marchi was a Roman artist who had accompanied Joshua Reynolds from Italy in 1752 as his assistant.

In 1768 he visited Jones's home at Pencerrig where he painted this portrait and others of the artist's family.
