This young shepherdess with her flock of sheep compares to earlier works by French artists such as Jean-François Millet and Camille Corot. Mauve was one of a group of Dutch artists, known as the HagueSchool, who were inspired by their interpretation of light and nature. Mauve applied similar ideas to his paintings of the Dutch heathlands in the area of Gooi.

And as I have just recently discovered Van Gogh was a pupil of Anton Mauve and indeed throughout his artistic life even after he left his native Holland for Antwerp, Paris and later Arles, Vincent spoke warmly of him in letters to Theo, his brother. His early inspiration from the North, Mauve joined Adolphe Monticelli, Millet and Delacroix as his most influential inspiration.

Demonstrating true empathy for the subject and without becoming over sentimental, a beautifully constructed and dignified image of landscape and it's relationship to peasant farmers. The Glascow Boys were much influenced by Mauve and his contemporaries.
