Short dashes of paint convey the activity of a busy market. Areas of bare paper show through where Boudin rushed to depict the momentary impression. A contrast to his modern beach scenes, this painting conveys a traditional rural community. Towards the end of the nineteenth century many artists spent time in remote areas of Brittany and Normandy, as a type of artistic tourism.
