RICHARDS, Ceri Giraldus (1903 - 1971)

White and Dark

Date: 1936

Media: painted wood construction

Size: 52.1 x 55.6 cm

Acquired: 1965; Purchase; with assistance of Knapping Fund

The artist was born near Swansea, and studied at the local art school and the Royal College. On the frontier between painting and sculpture, this abstract composition dates from the year that the British Surrealist Group mounted the International Surrealist Exhibition in London. It pays homage to Picasso and Arp, analysing the relationship between light and dark, form and void in a similar way to the contemporary reliefs of Ben Nicholson and the carvings of Henry Moore.
