The Earth and Moon

RODIN, Auguste (1840 - 1917)

The Earth and Moon

Media: marble

Size: 120.0 cm

Acquired: 1940; Gift; Gwendoline Davies

Accession Number: NMW A 2509

Collection: The Davies Sisters Collection

This group derives ultimately from Rodin's Gates of Hell. Together with an earlier marble version, ordered in 1898 and delivered in 1900, it derives from an original plaster in the Musèe Rodin in Paris. The small scale of the figures relative to the roughly worked block suggests the emancipation of the spirit from brute matter. The title implies a contrast between the mundane and the ethereal. This work was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1914.

Hi Adele,

Thanks for your comment - it really is a beautiful sculpture. You can ask for a print of this photo for a very reasonable price through our Print on Demand service - if we don't already offer it through the online shop, you'll find instructions on how to request it on the page.

Best wishes

The most beautiful and emotionally moving piece. I could not find a card or photo of it in your shop. Do you have one I could purchase?
