In this painting, titled St Ishmaels after a Pembrokeshire hamlet,Sutherland brings together thewalled forest he found there withan eroded tree from Pictonbeach, some 15 miles away. Heexplained that in this constructedscene “the time of day is lateafternoon on a dull day, with thesun breaking through betweenthe interstices of the branches”.The large circle may suggest acamera lens. The idea of lookingis repeated by the suggestion ofan eye, surveying the scene fromamongst the twisted tree forms.

I was brought up in St Ishmaels and Graham could be seen occasionally walking around Tish, Monk Haven and Sandy Haven.
