Landscape With Cattle
TROYON, Constant (1810 - 1865)
Media: oil on panel
Size: 18.8 x 12.7 cm
Acquired: 1924; Bequest; T.H. Thomas
Accession Number: NMW A 2504
This bucolic scene of a man herding cattle in the soft glow of sunset is typical of Troyon’s later works. Although he began as a porcelain painter, and then entered academic training, his paintings became increasingly naturalistic. The animal scenes were particularly popular among collectors. In relation to his observation of light, he could even be considered a pre-Impressionist.
