The Morning after the Storm

TURNER, Joseph Mallord William (1775 - 1851)

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 32.6 x 54.4 cm

Acquired: 1952; Bequest; Gwendoline Davies

Accession Number: NMW A 434

Collection: The Davies Sisters Collection

Throughout his life Turner painted maritime scenes. His late works, with their subtle and profound observation of the effects of light on water and atmosphere, foreshadow the discoveries of the Impressionists. This seascape of 1840-45 and its companion picture, The Storm, were apparently inspired by the great storm of 21 November 1840.

This picture is my favourite. I love the colours and the way Turner captured the light!
