This depicts the circular keep of the castle built by Llywelyn the Great in the thirteenth century, on the west side of Llyn Peris. The landscape has been altered into a classical composition in the manner of Claude. The farmstead at the right has an Italian character, although the peak of Snowdon can be seen in the background. This composition probably dates from the early 1760s. Extremely popular with tourists in the late eighteenth century, and a central image in the history of Wales, the castle was later the subject of J.M.W. Turner's diploma picture for the Royal Academy.
