James Charles was born in Warrington, the son of the Welsh cabinetmaker and designer Richard Charles. In 1872 he entered the Royal Academy schools before going to study in Paris. There, he was drawn to Impressionism, and particularly the plein-air movement. On his return to Britain, he exhibited regularly, and had some success abroad, winning medals at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889, and the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. This work, exhibited in the 1913-14 Cardiff Exhibition of Works by Certain Modern Artists of Welsh Birth or Extraction, represents the moderately progressive 'British Impressionism' associated with the New English Art Club between the 1890s and the First World War.

Dear Peter

I have just seen your comment re the booklet by Jac Charles. Jac Charles was my aunt and many years ago sent me a booklet which was dedicated to me as the grandson of James Charles. The booklet contains a biography, pictures and appendices of his works. If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

In the Tate Library Catalogue (Ref: V7CHAR CHA) there is reference to a booklet entitled "James Henry Charles (1851-1906)" c. 1960 by Jac. Charles.

Also noted is "This biographical information of my father, the late James Henry Charles, was written by me at the request of the Tate Gallery, of London, for incorporation in their Modern British Catalogue"

It would be nice to see a copy of this booklet if anyone holds a copy.

Richard Charles, your message left on August 19th is a delight to find. I too am a Charles descendent. Richard Charles, brother of James Charles the artist, was my great-grandmother\\'s father.
