Daniell was the pupil of his uncle Thomas and in 1799 he entered the Royal Academy Schools. From 1802 he concentrated on British scenery. He visited Wales in 1807 and made sketches for several oil paintings, including the present work, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1812. One of the great castles of Wales, Conway was built by Edward I from 1284. The harbour it overlooks was a major port for the export of local agricultural produce. Its appearance was transformed by the building of Telford's suspension bridge across the river Conwy in 1822-26.
