A Third Class Carriage
DAUMIER, Honore (1808 - 1879)
Media: oil on board
Size: 26.0 x 33.5 cm
Acquired: 1952; Bequest; Gwendoline Davies
Accession Number: NMW A 2455
Collection: The Davies Sisters Collection
This hurried oil sketch contains little fine detail yet is highly expressive. Daumier conveys the crowded discomfort and hints at the passengers’ character through their dress and posture. Daumier’s works often dealt with issues of social class and the third-class carriage was a favourite theme of Daumier’s in the early 1860s. Other more finished versions of this subject also exist.
