Workmen on the Street
DAUMIER, Honore (1808 - 1879)

Media: oil on board
Size: 12.4 x 17.0 cm
Acquired: 1952; Bequest; Gwendoline Davies

The focus of Daumier’s painting is a workman in shadow, smoking a pipe with a pick over his shoulder. Almost as if looking down his nose, his gaze points toward a wealthy-looking gentleman in a top hat. Daumier was a relentless Realist and social commentator. This painting reflects the unease which existed then between the wealthier bourgeoisie and labouring classes.
