Study of a Woodman

BARKER of Bath, Thomas (1769 - 1847)

Study of a Woodman

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 38.0 x 28.0 cm

Acquired: 1916; Gift; Major F.T. James

Accession Number: NMW A 517

A sketch of a subject frequently treated by Barker. Its unfinished state reveals the artist's use of a warm brown ground to provide a middle tone on which contours were speedily sketched – as in the figure at the left. In 1813 an ink sketch of the principal figure was published in a lithographic portfolio of Barker's drawings titled Impressions of Rustic Figures after Nature.
