Llewellyn

GRIFFITH, James Milo (1843 - 1897)

Llewellyn

Media: marble relief

Size: 41.1 cm

Acquired: 1912; Transfer; Cardiff Museum

Accession Number: NMW A 1722

Probably identical with the Medallion head in marble, dated 1870 in the artist's inventory. The subject is Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (d.1282), the last Welsh prince. It may be a pair to Griffith's Alto relievo, Head of Boadicea exhibited in Cardiff in 1870. Llywelyn and Boadicea are among the statues of Welsh heroes at Cardiff City Hall, inaugurated in 1916.

Dear Samantha,

Thank you very much for your enquiry. The historical figures chosen for the pantheon of Welsh heroes at Cardiff City Hall were Boudica, Saint David, Hywel Dda, Gerald of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Owain Glyndŵr, Henry VII, Bishop William Morgan, William Williams Pantycelyn and Sir Thomas Picton. An article about these statues can be found on the National Library of Wales's website Welsh Journals.

Best wishes,

Marc

Does the museum have the bust of C.R.M. TALBOT , apparently given on loan by Neath Port Talbot B. Council ?
If so can it be viewed & photographed?
