Size: 51.5 x 61.2 cm

Acquired: 1963; Bequest; Margaret Davies

Bevan studied at Westminster School of Art and in Paris. In 1911 he was a founder member of the Camden Town Group. This painting depicts the view from the Town Field at Horsgate, the home of the artist's father, near Cuckfield in East Sussex. Although the tonality of this landscape remains light, the emphasis on angular pattern and structure is analogous with contemporary Expressionist painting. Margaret Davies purchased this work in 1954.

Cuckfield is now in West Sussex, but when Bevan painted the scene it was indeed in East Sussex.

Just to tell you Cuckfield is in WEST SUSSEX, not EAST SUSSEX. I can see this view from outside the front door of my house which is built on the grounds of the stables which were next to Horsgate House, which still stands but is empty and where the artist and his family once lived. Alas, the Maples have become dilapidated and depleted over the years although the field itself is in good order.
