The fourth child of Augustus and Ida John, Edwin (1905-78) was born in Paris. After a brief career as a middleweight boxer he became a watercolourist. He inherited the estate of his aunt Gwen and did much to secure her posthumous reputation. This vivid oil sketch was painted at Alderney Manor in about 1911, when he was six years old.

Hi Sarah, The National Library of Wales has a collection of John family archives. You could contact them to see if they are interested.

Edwin John was a friend of my father, Dick Hosking when they were young and art students at the RCA in London in the 1920s. They used to play in Augustus' studio, in the dark, pouncing on each other until they knocked over a precious canvass and were told to stop. I have letters from Edwin to Dick (who died in 1991) and I am wondering what to do with them. Is there an archive that would like them? they are very silly
letters and young mannish....but it seems a shame th chuck them.
