Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Alphonse Legros

Dalou's portrait of the artist Alphonse Legros was intended as a half-length figure holding a palette and brush. Dissatisfied, however, Dalou broke up the original plaster model, but the head was salvaged and a number of bronze casts made. Legros was an important French Realist who moved to London. He assisted Dalou and his family when they were exiled from France in 1871.
