Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Camden Town portrait

In 1911 Sickert was closely involved with the foundation of the short-lived but influential Camden Town Group, whose other members included Harold Gilman, Spencer Gore, and Robert Bevan. This smokey scene with broken, dark colours is one of several interiors with a figure and an iron bedstead painted in 1915-16 at Sickert's studio in 8 Fitzroy Street. Here, the figure is a fully realised portrait. The woman's hat lies on the cupboard behind her head. Given through the Contemporary Art Society for Wales in memory of Captain G.C.H. Crawshay, 1956.
