Morfa Colliery explosion 1890, shawl

Black shawl with four metal fasteners at top. Made of 'embroidered' material with lace trim at neck and base. Re. Morfa Colliery explosion, 10th March 1890. Bought for funeral (embroidered).

Worn by Mary Peppin for funeral of her husband John Peppin (39) of Brick Row, Taibach who was trapped in an air pocket at Morfa Colliery disaster in 1890. The body was recovered 5 years later when an old working was explored.
