The theme of leisurely Parisians eating outdoors became popular among artists painting scenes of modern life. Here, the bearded gentlemen represent typical middle-class characters. They sit contentedly while one gives a piece of food to the bony-looking dog at his side. Another man wearing a flat cap hurriedly gulps his coffee, his eyes also fixed on the tasty morsel.
